Detectives of the ESBU adopt European experience in preventing cross-border crime
posted 14 July 2023 17:00

Combating crimes under the guise of humanitarian missions, human trafficking, smuggling and other cross-border crimes were the main topics discussed at a seminar for law enforcement agencies organized by the European Union Advisory mission.

As part of the training, representatives of the Territorial Department of the ESBU in Volyn region shared their experience of interagency cooperation with other agencies in carrying out analytical and operational search activities in the field of detecting crimes that infringe on the economic interests of the state in particular the Volyn region.

"In fact almost every investigation conducted by our territorial department requires interagency cooperation in one way or another. Unfortunately amid the war and the consolidation of the international community to help Ukrainians we have a new form of crime when a huge amount of smuggled goods and cargo is imported into the country under the guise of humanitarian missions for openly commercial purposes. Detecting these abuses is of great importance not only for the country's economy but also for its international image. And it is extremely important that all agencies work as a team," said Natalia Kavalerova, an employee of the TD ESBU in Volyn region, during the presentation of the ESBU case.

During the seminar, representatives of the European Union Advisory mission shared practical experience of such cooperation among EU countries and pointed out the factors that influence interagency cooperation. They also shared the experience of interagency cooperation of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board in preventing and solving cross-border crime at the regional level as well as the experience of Lithuania in interagency cooperation in the field of prevention and detection of human trafficking.

At the seminar law enforcement representatives also took part in practical exercises, including the creation of joint investigation teams.
