One of the areas of the ESBU's work is the investigation of crimes related to the illegal use of trademarks or trade names. However, combating such criminal offenses often requires additional involvement of intellectual property specialists. During the meeting, representatives of the Bureau and the Ukrainian National Office of Intellectual Property and Innovations (UANIPIO, IP office) discussed their role in investigations as well as possible areas of cooperation.
The experts of both organizations also discussed the problematic issues that arise during the transportation and storage of large volumes of confiscated goods their utilization or examination.
During the meeting preliminary agreements were reached on the inclusion of the ESBU representatives in the Center for Observation of Intellectual Property Rights Infringements. It should bring together stakeholders to combat counterfeiting.
As a reminder employees of the ESBU recently attended the Silver Axe IX conference organized by the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and Europol. The event was dedicated to strengthening cooperation between law enforcement agencies of different countries and right holders. According to the participants of the event, the development of the IP Enforcement Portal platform for the EU countries should help to solve the problem of counterfeiting. The issue of connecting the ESBU representatives to this platform is currently being considered.
